Radiation diffraction colorants
Munro and Merritt of PPG, Ohio, developed metallic effects pigments based on an ordered periodic array of particles held in a polymeric matrix is disclosed; the particles consist of  a core surrounded by a shell of a non-film forming composition that is different from the matrix.  A dispersion of core-shell particles is deposited onto a substrate in an ordered periodic array that diffracts radiation.  The cores are non-swellable and the shells are non-film forming.  This array is covered with a matrix which swells  the shells by diffusing components of the matrix into the shells; and fixing the coated array of particles.
