Silicone-urethane copolymers
Regan of AdvanSource Biomaterials Corporation, Massachusetts, formed silicone urethane copolymers from a reaction mixture of a diisocyanate, a polycarbonate diol, a polysiloxane, a C2-8 diol chain extender, and optionally a monofunctional siloxane chain terminator under an inert gas in the presence of a catalyst to initiate a one-step polymerization reaction.  The temperature of the reaction mixture is monitored, and the admixing step is terminated when the reaction mixture reaches a predefined temperature. The material can be further crosslinked by heating in an oven for a suitable period of time to ensure completion of the reaction. (RDC 8/29/2012)

Actinically-crosslinkable silicone-containing block copolymers
Chang and Wang of Novartis AG, Switzerland, developed a new class of silicone prepolymers containing poly(oxyalkylene) blocks, polysiloxane blocks, and actinically-crosslinkable groups which are acryl groups, thiol groups, ene-containing groups.  A preopolymer of the invention is prepared in a one-pot procedure according to the Michael addition of thiol to electron deficient alkenes, such as .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, without need for additional reaction step(s) to introduce actinically crosslinkable groups. The present invention is also related to silicone hydrogel contact lenses made from this class of silicone-containing prepolymers and to methods for making the silicone hydrogel contact lenses.
