McBrearty, Michael
1986 - 1996
The Dupont Company
Senior Research Physicist
--- led a diverse group of electrical, mechanical, and
software engineers, rheologists, polymer scientists
and technicians through the development and
commercialization of an in-line rheometer that
enabled process engineers to better understand and
control polymer manufacturing processes.
--- characterized process viscometers for automotive
paints, established correlations with laboratory
measurements, and provided an in-line system that
improved quality control.
--- formed and led the DuPont Rheology Network
which continues to promote valuable technology
transfer among the research, production and
academic communities.
--- designed an in-line dielectric sensor which
successfully monitored compositions and viscosities
of polymer melts and provided a rugged, corrosion and
abrasion resistant instrument for process measurement
and control.
--- developed threadline tension sensors,
installed them in textile fibers spinning machines,
and provided data which was used to reduce the
frequency of threadline breakages.
1979 - 1986
Kulicke & Soffa Industries
Engineering Supervisor
--- designed piezoelectric transducers and acoustic
systems that allowed faster ultrasonic bonding of
wires in microcircuit packages.
--- studied resonant frequency variations during
bonding attempts with and without wires;
--- supervised one Ph.D. and two
M.S. theses to understand them.
--- designed, produced and supported over
200 commercial installations of a system that
analyzed the acoustic loading patterns and
successfully stopped the bonders when
the wires fell out.
--- designed a high voltage power supply which utilize
electronic switches to generate glow discharges
at the ends of gold bonding wires to form balls;
--- achieved a cost savings over the previous expensive
mechanical switches.
--- developed a hardware system of printed circuit
boards for wire and die bonders and substantially
increased production capacity.
1972 - 1979
Decision Data Computer Corp.
electronics technician
--- calibrated and repaired keypunches, printers and
other computer peripherals.
--- designed and built test equipment and software.
