Shape Memory Materials

Shape memory polymers soften and harden quickly and repetitively on demand.  They can  temporarily soften, change shape, and harden back to a solid structural state in new shapes and forms.

Tong of Cornerstone Research Group has developed a castable coating based on a self-crosslinking shape memory polymer.  The polymer contains a silane crosslinker added to acrylates forming alkylsiloxyl groups in the acrylate copolymers.  Applications include self-healing coatings for vehicles and morphing skins for aircraft.

Membrane Separations

Membranes are widely used for the separation of gases and liquids, including for example, separating acid gases, such as CO2 and H2S from natural gas, and the removal of O2 from air.  Polymeric membranes are effective but carbon molecular sieve membranes may be more effective.

Kiyono, Williams and Koros of Georgia Tech Research and Shell Oil developed a carbon membrane for reducing acid gas in natural gas.  The membrane is produced by pyrolysis of polymeric asymmetric hollow fibers in an inert gas with 40 pp, oxygen.

Building Panels

Most sound absorbers in buildings are ineffective because they can absorb only a limited number of different sound frequencies. 

Borroni of Bellmax Acoustic, Australia, developed a sound absorbing panel with the look and feel of conventional plaster board consisting of an impermeable membrane covering a layer with clusters of sound absorbing cavities.  These clusters have different vibration resonances enabling sound absorption of a wide variety of different sound frequencies.

Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Superhydrophobic surfaces can greatly increase efficiency of many fluid transfer processes such as reduced window condensation to ship propeller efficiency. Superhydrophobic surfaces are based on nanometer surface protusions and depressions and usually are difficult and expensive to produce

Kim et al of the Postech Academy-Industry Foundation, South Korea, produced superhydrophobic surfaces by first forming nanometer holes on a metallic surrface by anodizing.   A non-wetting polymer such as PTFE is deposited on the surface and the structured film removed.  This film can be removed and place on a surface for the desired superhydrophobic surface.

Light-emitting materials are used for self-illuminated signs and "nuclear" batteries.  One example, consists of polystyrene labeled with tritium that emits beta particles.  The polymer is doped with a phosphor emitting visible light when irradiated by the beta particles from the tritium.  Instability because of phosphor diffusion is a problem for these systems. 

Smith, and McKague developed a stable radiation-emitting material based on a silicone with tritium and a wavelength-shifter side chain (phosphor) bonded to the silicone.  The wavelength-shifter contains a cyclic, aromatic group emitting light in response to the tritium beta particles.  The wave shifter content is 0.015 gram/gram of silicone.

Polymer are replacing metals in many application because of reduced weight and processability.  However, polymers have lower mechanical strength and are less heat resistant than metals.  Polyimides are heat resistant but they are difficult to process.  Crosslinking improves both mechanical properties and heat resistance.  Polyimide oligomers and low molecular weight polyimides are easy to process and the final crosslinking develops adequate stiffness and strength.  However, such thermoset polyimides will not withstand oxidative degradation on long-term exposure at temperatures above 200 C because of inferior stability of the cross-linking groups.  

Rosenberg et al of Nexam Chemicals, Sweden, developed catalysts for chain extension and/or cross-linking of oligomers or polymers based on  carbon-carbon triple bonds such as  phenylethynyl terminated imide oligomers.  However these agents require 350 C temperature for reaction.  This curing temperature is lowered with crosslinking catalysts such as cyclic aliphatic tertiary amine and a heteroaryl or a tertiary nucleophilic organophosphorus compound.
