Fullerenes small carbon particle forming hollow spheres, ellipsoids, tubes or planes. The small hollow spheres consisting of around 60 atoms and also called  buckyballs.   These were discovered in1985 by Tobert Curl, Harold Kroto and Richard Smalley and are named after Richard Buckminster Fuller who developed the geodesic dome which is the basic atomic structure of fullerene.  These structures are sufficiently stable to be a molecule, which can react and even form polymers.  C60, C70, C76, and C84 molecules are found in soot and are formed during atmospheric lightning.  Other atoms may be trapped inside the fullerene structure to form inclusion compounds,       endohedral fullerenes.  (RDC 6/22/2008)
