Mission
Maro's mission is to help the reader to keep up --- to give a bird's eye view of what is going on in Polymer Science and Technology. Maro does this through the website and the Alerts service.
What is Maro?
Maro is a company formed by Professor Corneliussen to serve the polymer community with a convenient, easy to use, current awareness service. He is Professor Emeritus of Materials Engineering of Drexel University in Philadelphia. For more details click on Resume. His teaching experience convinced him that a broad view of the expanding science and technology can greatly enhance a practicing professional's productivity. Very few people have time form that and he is attempting to alleviate that problem.
Why should you care about Polymer Science and Technology?
Polymer is the fancy --- scientific word --- for big molecules. Most polymers are based on carbon chemistry. As such they represent one, very large part of the materials spectrum, the other being ceramics and metals. If one wants to do things in the world, it usually requires materials and the most versatile materials are based on carbon polymers. Polymeric materials exist in many forms, from rubber to plastics. These materials are so important that each is a business on its own and include plastics, composites, rubber, coatings, adhesives, fibers and textiles along with a whole host of natural materials including wood and paper. Following the growing edge of this developing technology through patents and journals is a very good way to keep up. Maro's mission is to help the reader do just that quickly without spending a lot of time.
Keeping Up
Contrary to popular belief, keeping up is not impossible even in this day of massive paper trails. 5 to 15 minutes is day is all that is necessary with the Maro system. This system is based on two email messages a day --- Maro Alerts --- and a collection of patent links on www.maropolymer.com according to topic --- the Maro Patent Encyclopedia.
Although the messages are long, they can be scanned very quickly, in five minutes or less. A click or so will take jump to the details on the internet. If this is done regularly --- say - five minutes a day --- e.g. during morning coffee, you will be amazed by what is learned in a short time. It won't be long before this will pay off and could pay off in a big way.
Reading Patents
Patent at first look formidable to the uninitiated. They are, however, not if you know how to pick out the good stuff. The patent is a legal document and is largely written for the non-scientific reader. Every new term is defined and the focus is on what can be done in simple steps.. The background section is most important to non-specialist reader. Sometimes, these background paragraphs are real gems. The examples can really clarify the concept behind the patent.. Ofter they gives very specific details not found in anywhere else. With a little practice the patent can be one of the most interesting pieces of technical literature around.
Who are you?
Each professional is unique with different interests, needs, position and personal status. The general approach of Maro means that there is something for everyone.
Many would like a current awareness system designed just for them. In most cases this is not practical and nor is it such a good idea. Specificity is necessary when one is searching for specific answers, but not current awareness. Breakthroughs come from making connections between apparently unrelated events and not from doing the same old thing.
Interests change, sometimes daily. A third party service can't keep up even if they could read minds.

Connections
Maro provide direct internet links to either the text versions of patents or recent journal issues. It is the direct linkage that makes Maro Special. Scrolling through list is quick until one sees something of interest. A click very quickly takes the reader to the details of that item. The combination a rapid scanning and quick access makes Maro special. This quick hook-up to the details enhances creativity and promotes connections between seemingly unrelated items. This connectivity may lead to breakthroughs in problem solving or invention. Beyond that the quick linkeage is simply fun and interesting.
Maro Alerts
The Maro Alerts are the Maro current awareness service to help professionals to keep up. Each week the newly published US Patents are reviewed and links to the polymer related patents copied. Eack week, typically a subscriber is sent about 300 US Patent links. In addition, over 400 journals are scanned each week for new issues and links made to these issues. Roughly twenty new issue link are sent daily.
Daily, these links are put into email messages and sent to the subscriber. Typically there are 100 patent links and twenty journal links in these messages. Although the messages are long, it takes only minutes for the reader to scan a list for something of interest. A click jumps one to the text version of the patent or to the recent journal issue.
It is a simple matter to copy any link to a special page and keep them for further reference.
The concept behind the Alerts is that of person checking the message --- say --- during morning coffee. It is intended to be simple and quick. When finished a simple delete removes the message from one's computer.
Patent Encyclopedia
The collected Patent Links are stored according to Topic on the Website. This collection is called the Maro Patent Encyclopedia. It is comprehensive and massive. At the present time over 30 000 links are in the Encyclopedia and the weekly set of Patent Alerts added weekly.
Verbatim Copies
Because of the Background sections of the patents as well as the examples, these collections make a superb encyclopedia. Many practical topics are found here and nowhere else. Through the alphabetical index and the Area Outline, collections can be found very quickly and the text version of the patents accessed.
Text version of the patent are great and good for most purposes. However, sometimes especially when chemical structures are involved, the verbatim copy of the patent is needed. A free TIFF software is available to see and print the veratim copy. One can go to the help section of the US Patent site or click on Verbatim Copies for more information.
Properties
Maro also has on its website two collections of property data pages. In one collection, each property page gives the range of values for different materials for that property.
In the other collection, each page gives properties for a particular resin with values based on the 1999 issue of Modern Plastics Encyclopedia.
